When it comes to Italian islands, you’ve probably heard all about Capri, Sicily, and Sardinia - but how much do you know about Ischia? Nestled in the azure waters of the Gulf of Naples this charming Italian island offers a refreshing escape from the crowds. Though lesser known compared to its famous counterparts, it’s certainly increasing in popularity due to its lush landscapes, thermal springs, pristine beaches, ancient ruins, and relaxed atmosphere. This hidden gem will give you all of your White Lotus vibes sans the extortionate price tag. In this post, I’m sharing everything I learned during my one week trip in the month of June to help you plan your own Ischia adventure. Experience it for yourself before it becomes the next best thing!

How to Get to Ischia: Transportation Options

So you've set your sights on Ischia, huh? Well, step one is figuring out how to get there! Naples is going to be your jumping off point, so fly, drive, or train it to Naples and get yourself to the Port of Naples. There is no Uber servicing the city, so getting there is up to your negotiating skills and the taxi driver, or your patience and ability to figure out public transportation. If taking a taxi, you’re looking at spending about 25-35 euros. Alternatively, there is a bus option. The Alibus shuttle bus departs from the airport every 20-30 minutes and will take you to Naples' central train station. From there, you can take a train to the port of Naples (be sure to hop off at Napoli Porta Garibaldi).

Once you make it to the Port of Naples, you have two options:

Option 1 (recommended): Catch a ferry. There are several companies making quite a few journeys daily, and you’ll see that some are faster than others. I opted for a hydrofoil ferry with the company Alilauro which got me to the island in under an hour. If you want to purchase your ticket ahead of time, you can do so directly through the ferry companies or my preferred aggregate site, Ferry Scanner. When looking for tickets, the port is Napoli (Beverello) and the ticket should be about 21 euros. You will have to exchange your booking for a real ticket at the port, but getting it ahead of time secures your seat in the event that it’s crazy busy (and in the summer, it will be!).

Option 2: If you're really feeling fancy, you could opt for a private boat charter and arrive in style. I don’t have that kind of money, but if I did, I’d be booking something like this private transfer from Naples airport.

Where to Stay in Ischia: Accommodation Recommendations

Alright, let's talk about where to rest your weary head on the glorious island of Ischia! This place has got accommodations for every taste and budget.

If you're a beach bum, you've got to check out the waterfront hotels that offer front-row seats to the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. Feel like a celebrity while lounging by the pool with a fruity drink in hand. A few options to consider:

Budget: Mandra B&B

Mid-Range: Pagoda Hotel

Ballin’: Mezzatorre

We were lucky to get a special pass to visit Mezzatorre for an aperitivo for my friend’s 30th birthday- the property is stunning and I very much aspire to stay here someday!

If you're more into that cozy village vibe, there are charming stays tucked away in the winding streets of Ischia's hills and towns. You'll feel like you stumbled upon a hidden treasure. Here are a few highly rated guest houses:

Budget: Hotel Villa Fiorentina

Mid-Range: Hotel Ulisse

Ballin’: Albergo Il Monastero

And let's not forget the thermal spa resorts! Picture yourself soaking in natural hot springs, getting pampered like royalty.

Budget: Hotel Villa Franca

Mid-Range: Hotel Terme Providence

Ballin’: Regina Isabella-Resort Spa Restaurant

Lastly, if you’re a big group, there are some epic apartments like the one that we booked. It’s called Acqua Marina, and it comfortably sleeps seven. I mean, can you believe this view?

Wherever you choose to stay, one thing's for sure: you'll have an unforgettable time and sleep like a baby on this remarkable island.

What to Pack for Ischia: Essential Items for Your Trip

When planning for my trip, I naturally had a look at the weather and packed accordingly (or so I thought.) But what I quickly learned was that my idea of mid-70’s and Ischia’s idea of mid-70s (that’s ~24 degrees for my Celsius folks) were two very different things. I figured it’d get cooler in the evenings and that I should have some sweaters and jackets - the lesson I learned? No sweaters or jackets were needed. Not even a little bit. If that was the case for June, July or August visitors can safely travel ultra light.

Your island packing list is going to be pretty standard for a summer getaway:

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen (that Ischia sun is no joke)

  • A roomy beach bag (this is a great option that’s easy to pack!)

  • Swimwear. (Blue really popped in Ischia, I wore suits similar to this and this!)

  • Sandals/comfy walking shoes (if you like hiking or want to go to the castle, you’ll want comfy shoes, TRUST ME!) I can’t recommend my Birkenstock sandals enough.

  • Cover-ups (I love this knitted one from Amazon!)

  • Sundresses (guess that’s T-shirts and shorts for the fellas)

  • Shirts/Tanks

  • Shorts/Skirts

  • Flowy, linen pants like these.

  • A few nice outfits for fancier occasions

Transportation options while in ischia

There are quite a few options when it comes to getting from point A to B on Ischia. Depending on your situation, some options may be better than others.

As a large group of 8, we relied on walking, the local bus, and splitting taxis. You can of course rent a car (though after seeing how people drive and the narrow streets that wouldn’t be my first choice) or even a scooter if you like the wind in your hair and are feeling adventurous.

I will say that taxis were not cheap. For example, a 6-8 minute drive from the port to our accommodation cost about 20 euros. These costs aren’t so bad when you’re splitting with others, but if you’re a couple or on your own, this can really start to add up. When it comes to the bus, the island has a pretty solid network of routes to get you around and you can pick up tickets in the little Tabacchi shops.

*Cash is king on the island when it comes to taxis so make sure to always have some euros.

Best places to eat in ischia

Eden Ischia

If you’re looking to live la dolce vita, Eden Ischia is a hotel, restaurant, and beach club that may deserve several visits, especially if you’re staying nearby like we were. First, we came as dinner guests (the view of the castle in the evening is heavenly!) and later as sun seekers enjoying their gorgeous seaside beach club (more on that later). The restaurant is a bit on the fancy side but didn’t break the bank. We had a group of four and I paid about €75 when sharing a few apps, having a main, a cocktail, and sharing dessert. The ambiance is wonderful, and again- the castle views!!!

La Conchiglia Sant’Angelo

This was a lunch stop on the day we chartered a boat, and it was lovely. They have an outdoor patio overlooking the sea, and serve high-quality food (particularly seafood). Prices are a bit on the higher end for the island, but similar to Eden, you’re also paying for the atmosphere and ambiance. The Gnocchi alla Sorrentina (€16) was really nice.

Restaurant Auras

A 4.9 rating on Google had us running to this authentic italian restaurant in Ischia Ponte. They call what they serve “authentic Italian grandmother food enriched with modern elegant twists” and I can confirm it was delicious. I ordered a vegetarian ravioli and the ravioli were handmade (albeit purple which was new for me) and filled with a tasty ricotta cheese. The staff are lovely and the restaurant is right on the sea offering great views of the castle as well.

Ice da Luciano

Also located in Ischia Ponte a few steps from the jetty that leads to the castle, this gelato place is a must, and you’ll find yourself returning again and again. I found myself alternating between savory flavors and refreshing fruity ones.

Il Giardino

This charming spot was just down the road from our Airbnb so we decided to give it a try. They offer wood-fired pizzas, pasta, and homemade desserts in, as the name suggests, a garden-style atmosphere. The staff speak excellent English and our particular waiter was an absolute hoot. Prices are good, portions are huge, and it’s a great choice for a casual meal.

Ristorante Pizzeria Pirozzi

A good option for a Neapolitan-style pizza with a terrace in Ischia Ponte. Pizzas were about €12 on average and very filling and they serve a variety of apps, pastas, and desserts as well.

Budget Tip:

If your accommodation has a kitchen, use it! Groceries were surprisingly cheap in Ischia, and it can be a lot of fun to whip up a fresh pasta dish at home and drink some wine.

Exploring Ischia: Must-Visit Attractions and Activities

Giardini Poseidon Terme

Let me tell you about the Italian spa day of my dreams...

Here’s how it works:

For €42 you get access to this lush compound of over 20 different thermal and salt water pools. You’ll also put down a refundable €5 for a bracelet that taps you into the grounds, onto the private beach, and into your locker! There's also a private beachfront area, and for additional $$, spa services, a cafe, and a wine grotto. Anything you could need (eg: bathrobe, towel) you can rent, and there are showers and changing rooms which come in handy when you’re going out for fancy drinks after your spa day!

Note: the thermal springs are of volcanic origin and are so rich in minerals that it’s best to wear a swimming cap to protect your hair. These can also be purchased on site.

Sunshine Charters

Our day with Sunshine Charters was probably my favorite day of all. You can charter a boat to take you around the entire perimeter of Ischia island, and depending on your boat choice and group size, this can end up being extremely affordable. Our boat captain spoke excellent English and he was a lot of fun. He also provided towels, snacks, water, and soda, and we could purchase champagne, which - don’t mind if we do.

Castello Aragonese d’Ischia

An absolute must while visiting Ischia is the Aragonese Castle, which basically stands as an iconic symbol of the island. At only €12 per ticket, we opted guide ourselves around and explore. It’s open all year round, 7 days a week, from 9am to sunset, whenever that may be! Keep in mind the last ticket is sold an hour and a half before closing, so give yourself plenty of time. Also be sure to check out the two panoramic cafes for epic views. As mentioned when talking about wardrobe, comfy shoes are a MUST. There are some very steep parts of this castle to climb!

Eden Ischia

I mentioned Eden Ischia earlier as a dining spot, but it’s also the perfect beach club during the day. There are different tickets you can buy and you basically get to choose your experience. Do you want to hang by the pool? On the sea decks? For €60.00 we chose the package that gave us a sunbed spot next to the sea, and we had access to the pool and were given a beach towel for the whole day. Food and drinks are readily available as well! Check their site for more info and prices.

Sant Angelo

This colorful old fishing village was a stop on our journey around the island with Sunshine Charters. We had lunch at La Conchiglia Sant’Angelo, as previously mentioned, and had a little bit of time to explore. There are some lovely beaches here to explore and it’s incredibly scenic!
