I’ve stayed in some pretty spectacular places while traveling, but Chateau de Chantore had me feeling some kind of way. In fact, I would argue that this stay was one of the most memorable I’ve had in my 6+ years of full-time travel! If you’re exploring Normandy or planning a trip to Mont St. Michel, this is one accommodation option that you should definitely consider!

Location

Chateau de Chantore is located in Bacilly, France, just 27 miles from Saint-Malo and 7 miles from Mont St. Michel. The chateau itself is located on 18 hectares of land, and is a truly peaceful and secluded estate. The long driveway leading up to it feels like something straight out of a film, and you’ll quickly discover that the chateau isn’t just a place to stay- it is a place to experience and discover.

History

A lord of Chantore built the 18th century chateau in 1780. He wisely chose a hilltop location with a view of nearby Mont St. Michel, a stunning tidal island that is still visible from the grounds and even some of the rooms today. The current owners bought the chateau and restored it, turning it into a B&B of the highest standards. I had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners, Bernard, and he was truly the most hospitable Frenchman you’ll ever meet. He exudes a genuine warmth that makes you feel more than welcome.

The Experience

Upon arrival, Bernard offered a glass of cider, homemade and sourced from the property’s apple orchards. (I honestly can’t think of a better welcome drink than this in the warm afternoon sunshine!) At this particular time there weren’t many other guests, so there were quite a few moments where it felt like we had the place entirely to ourselves.

The chateau boasts two suites and three rooms, and my jaw nearly dropped when we were shown to ours- the gorgeous Marquis Room. I was ready to feel like a princess for the night, and this room did not disappoint. Wood floors, antique furniture, a beautiful balcony, fireplace, and luxurious four-poster bed were just a few of the details that quite literally had me jumping up and down with excitement.

After checking in, it was time to explore the chateau and the grounds. Several of the common rooms are open to guests, including the blue sitting room, the Chinese room, and the dining room. There is also a gorgeous lake, walking paths, horse stables, a greenhouse, and even wild peacocks wandering about. The seclusion and stillness of the estate just adds to the feeling that you’ve been transported back in time.

I found it very difficult to leave to leave the property, but we spent the evening chasing the sunset and extensively photographing Mont St. Michel. It was a beautiful, clear evening with a sky full of stars, and Mont St. Michel looked like the opening scene of a Disney film. After, we returned to the chateau for a wonderful night’s sleep.

The following morning was probably the best part of the whole stay- a massive feast of a breakfast fit for a queen. I’d never seen anything like it. Bernard was there with a smile taking our drink orders, asking how we’d like our eggs, and serving up a variety of items. There was far more food than I could ever have made room for- yogurt, meat, cheese, fruit salad, and pastries, just to name a few. Between the opulent table setting, the portraits hanging all around, and the delicious food, I was pretty sure I’d found my idea of heaven in France.

And if taking my word for it isn’t enough- the guest reviews are some of the best I’ve ever seen. In fact, they’re exceptional. Chateau de Chantore has an impressive 9.8 on booking.com, and it is very well deserved. I would not hesitate to return to this property, and if you’re ever making your way through the Normandy region, I suggest you make a stop too!
